Conjecture

"What causes Oedipus's downfall? Is he simply a pawn in a predetermined game played by the gods? Can he be regarded as responsible for the suffering and death in the play" (Meyer 1091)?

  1. Oedipus’s downfall is caused by his extreme need of wanting to know the truth. Yes, Oedipus is a pawn in a predetermined game played by the gods. I say this because when Oedipus’s parents received the alarming prophecy that their son will grow up to kill his own father. His parents react by arranging to have him killed but somehow Oedipus manages to survive. But later on Oedipus receives an even worse prophecy; he will not only kill his own father but will also marry his own mother.
